Recommended, but with concern. See notes. Pr. Stephen Bohr’s study on the 24 Elders is a very fascinating and attention-captivating for those who are earnest students of the Bible, but particularly aimed to a Seventh-day Adventist audience. According to the SDA Bible Commentary, there are four views on the identity of 24 elders. 1. The 24 elders are redeemed human beings. 2. The 24 elders are compared to the 24 Levitical priesthood. 3. The 24 elders symbolize Israel-- two elders from each tribe, God’s people before the cross; and the other, spiritual Israel. 4. The 24 angels are angels, not human beings. In Pr. Bohr’s series on the 24 elders, Pr. Bohr identifies the elders as “powerful angels” and representatives of other worlds. Pr. Bohr presents this topic in a very convincing way. An Adventist is left to believe that, indeed, the elders must be angels. CONCERNS: The main concern is that Pr. Bohr quotes Ellen White extensively throughout his presentations. On presentation #3, Pr. Bohr references more Ellen White quotes than actual Bible verses. 20 out of 60 minutes of the presentation are about what “Ellen White says.” Concerning the use of her own writings, Ellen White says: In public labor do not make prominent, and quote that which Sister White has written, as authority to sustain your positions. To do this will not increase faith in the testimonies. Bring your evidences, clear and plain, from the Word of God. A "Thus saith the Lord" is the strongest testimony you can possibly present to the people. Let none be educated to look to Sister White, but to the mighty God, who gives instruction to Sister White. (Letter 11, 1894.) The testimonies of Sister White should not be carried to the front. God’s Word is the unerring standard. The Testimonies are not to take the place of the Word. Great care should be exercised by all believers to advance these questions carefully, and always stop when you have said enough. Let all prove their positions from the Scriptures and substantiate every point they claim as truth from the revealed Word of God.--Letter 12, 1890. {Ev 256.2}
