In this presentation Pr. Bohr attempts to present a foundation for a dual application to the prophecies pertaining to the Abomination of Desolation, the Great Tribulation, and the Signs in the Heavens presented in Matthew 24. He starts off by stating that Matthew 24:14-30 and Revelation 14 and on present the same sequence of events using different symbols. Then he proceeds to present the past fulfillments of the prophecies mentioned, emphasizing on the Great Tribulation. He then latter attempts to apply a future fulfillment to these as follows: Symbol/Event Future Fulfillment The Abomination of Desolation National Sunday Law (NSL) The Great Tribulation Death decree for those who refuse to accept the NSL The Great Signs in the Sky Prior to Christ’s return and the end of the age The problem I see with this presentation is that Pr. Bohr is presenting a position that differs from that established by the SDA church regarding the nature of apocalyptic prophecy. It is stated by the Biblical Research Institute in the book entitled 70 Weeks, Leviticus, Nature of Prophecy the following: “Dual, or twofold, fulfillment may be present in some biblical predictions where contextual scriptural indications make this clear, and when details of the specifications are met in each instance. On the other hand, apocalyptic prophecy, as found in the books of Daniel and Revelation, has but one fulfillment for each symbol.” (Emphasis added) Pg. 322 Based on this assertion, Pr. Bohr’s presentation in regards to the dual fulfillment of the Abomination of Desolation is unfounded. Christ in Matthew 24:14-16 clearly identified the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel as that which took place prior to the siege of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. This constitutes the sole fulfillment of this symbol as clearly identified by Christ. To say it has a second fulfillment in the future trespasses the principles of sound prophetic interpretation. One could say that it has a spiritual application, but there are no grounds to say that this specific symbol has a secondary future fulfillment. The following statements, taken from the presentation under review, show where Pr. Bohr directly opposes the official SDA interpretation on the Great Tribulation identified in Matthew 24:21-29. • 08:38 – 08:53 “The Abomination of Desolation, the Tribulation, and the Signs in the Heavens have two fulfillments, or actually they are fulfilled in two stages.” • 10:06 – 10:12 “…Now when you get to the book of Revelation, you have a future fulfillment to what the Little Horn did… • 10:26 – 10:53 “…In other words, the change in God’s law, or the attempted change in God’s law in Daniel 7:25, in the past, during the 1260 years represents the future period when the mark of the beast, which is the change in the law, which is the counterfeit day of worship, will be enforced upon people by force of law.” • 12:12 – 12:20 “…so what I want us to realize is that this period of tribulation has two stages. The first stage is during the 1260 years. The second stage is in the future, after the deadly wound is healed. • 12:38 – 12:47 “…The first stage is when the beast rules for 42 months. The second stage is where the deadly wound is healed and it will persecute again.” • 13:06 – 13:13 “Not only does the Abomination of Desolation have a two-fold application, but the tribulation as well.” • 13:58 – 14:14 he states: “Now allow me to read you a couple of very interesting statements that we find in the SOP, in the writings of Ellen White where is shows that she understood, she caught this idea of two stages to the Great Tribulation…” Then he proceeds to read Desire of Ages pg. 631 identifying this as the past stage. Here is the quote: “For more than a thousand years such persecution as the world had never known was to come upon Christ’s followers. Millions upon millions of His faithful witnesses were to be slain…Had not God’s hand been stretched out to preserve His people, all would have perished. “But for the elect’s sake, He said, ‘those days shall be shortened.” • 14:54 – 15:14 “By the way, we can’t refer to this as two separate tribulation
